Hedycarya arborea      Porokaiwhiri, pigeon wood
Pigeon wood is a common tree in cultivation, partly due to its name which has the image of being pigeon food, which it is.  The verdent green colour of its serrated leaves and the bright orange or red coloured fruits make this an attractive plant in the ornamental garden. The species is dioecious, producing seed only on female plants, so if seed presence is the quality of the plant that is required then plants should be propagated by cutting. The seed is readily available from summer to mid winter and is classed as recalcitrant. Do not allow it to dry out and sow on collection. It germinates readily in a glass house over winter.
