Hoheria populnea Lacebark Houhere

The leaves of Houhere are 5-12 cm long and often purplish beneath. The plant flowers in spring. They are white and found in panicles. Distribution: North Cape to Waikato A variable species of several forms. Shrub or small tree to 6m. Quick growing. The inner bark is composed of lace-like fibres that was useful for embroidery by maori and europeans. The plant is hardy in most soil and can withstand coastal winds. Semi-deciduous. Seeds are wind dispersed and germinate readily if sown on collection.
