The seed has a high water content (43%) and is sensitive to dessication and as such the seed is classed as recalcitrant. The receptacle (fleshy berry)should be left on the seed as this receptacle with its high water content, will buffer the seed against the effects of water stress and confers advantageous properties to the survival of the seed.
