Kia ora and hello again.
Summer is well on its way here in Northland with the Pohutukawa blooming early. There were a few around the Whangaroa Harbour that were putting on a dazzling display in Mid November! According to New Zealand's forest lore, the early flowering of pohutukawa signals a long hot summer. The botanist view is time of flowering has more to do with winter chill than a prediction of what's to come. Let's just wait and see. .
Elaeocarpus dentatus hinau
Hinau has been flowering heavily this past month. This tall forest tree produces attractive flowers in racemes that are 15cm long with drooping white petalled flowers. The simple way of identifying Hinau is by looking for the domatia pits at the midrib vein on the underside of the leaf.
Carmichaelia australis = C. aligera, maakaka, maukoro
The New Zealand leafless broom Carmichaelia has also been flowering. These hardy plants do well in pots on the verandah.
Puketi kids
The Puketi forest website has introduced a kids club. A perfect way for young people to get involved in helping one of Northland's majestic forests.
