Hi
Kia ora and hello again.

Welcome to May's Bushmansfriend newsletter. I'm a little late this month with a flood and the school holidays delaying the plan. However all is good.

This month's photos

Myrsine salicina toro
Myrsine salicina Toro
Another attractive NZ native tree that is ideal for ornamentation. A forest tree found from Northland to Greymouth with a handsome foliage display and small bunches of spring flowers.

Rimu-male-&-female-foliage
Rimu male and female foliage.
Rimu produce male and female trees and with a bit of attention you can tell one from the other. The male is on the left and the foliage is  prickly to touch due to its short stout leaves. The female on the right has slightly longer leaves and is softer to the touch.

Metrosideros fulgens
Metrosideros fulgens the winter flowering Rata is an epiphytic climber which is flowering at the moment. It produces one of our most attractive flowers when little else is flowering.

North and South Article.

north&south

Look for this months (May) North and South magazine Pg100-10, there is a wonderful travel article by Elizabeth Light on her adventures in the Whangaroa Harbour. Titled "Gone Bush" the article reviews my Guided bushwalk and also Neil's Whangaroa Houseboat Rentals. It is very well written and captures the special ambience of Whangaroa.

"Down the other side of the ridge and along the Wairakau Valley the scenery is so stunning it hijacks our focus from flora. Great rock knobs punctuate the skyline, a waterfall cascades over a towering precipice, and the Wairakau river, crystal clear with deep swimming holes, has carved a a tall cliff-edged canyon. The valley floor is steamy, hot and lushly tropical with Ponga, Nikau, and Filmy Fern flourishing in rocky crevices and shady glades. Puriri are huge, scattering shiraz flowers across our path, and audaciously acrobatic Pohutukawa spread their branches extravagently while clinging to cliff edges with long gnarly toes."

The bush walk along the Wairakau Stream was described to me by a well travelled customer as one of the three most beautiful walks in New Zealand. (The other 2 were the Tongariro crossing and the Milford track!.) The Northland Air New Zealand inflight magazine supplement describes the walk as "One of the best guided walks you will find anywhere". To experience this walk, either guided or unguided follow this link

Nga Pepeha a nga Tipuna
The sayings of the ancestors
by Hirini Moko Mead & Neil Grove
.

This unique collection of more than 2,500 pepeha, "sayings of the ancestors, " were gathered and compiled from all over New Zealand over a 20-year period. More than just proverbs, pepeha include charms, witticisms, figures of speech, and boasts, and they are featured in the formal speeches heard every day on the marae and in the oral literature handed down from past generations. The pepeha also provide a rich source of language, using metaphor and an economy of words to show language that enriches the textbook Maori of today. I have found this reference book fascinating for its rich source of Language, metaphor and insight into the natural world of Te Reo.  Nga Pepeha allows the reader access to the imagery of the Maori language usually only reserved for competent Te Reo speakers. Highly recommended for all New Zealanders.
You can purchase this book on line from this Fishpond link or, I have gathered the proverbs that illustrate how NZ's native plants have been incorporated into imagery and metaphor, illustrating what the Tipuna valued and and considered to be good.from this link.

The Cats Pyjamas is a fine accomodation provider overlooking beautiful Cable Bay in Doubtless Bay. Highly recommended for that winter get away. Only 25 mins drive from Whangaroa. Check it out here.
