Cordyline: The cabbage trees.

Cabbage-trees

All New Zealanders are familiar with the iconic cabbage tree but did you know there are six species of Cordyline in the New Zealand flora, as well as many horticultural varieties?.
The genus Cordyline is a member of the Agave family and consists of about fifteen species found in Polynesia, Australia, India and Malaysia.
Cordyline australis , Ti or cabbage tree need no introduction and offers the landscaper a tree that characterises the New Zealand landscape. Found throughout New Zealand, they are easy to grow from seed and do well in a variety of soils and situations.
Cordyline indivisa, Toi or Mountain Cabbage tree has a distribution from Thames south and prefers cooler conditions. It has broader, bluer leaves than C. australis and seldom branches.
Cordyline pumilio, Ti rauriki, dwarf cabbage tree is a small grass like plant of the forest floor up to 1 metre tall and is ideal amongst Carex and Hebe in an ornamental border
Cordyline kaspar, is endemic to Northlands three Kings Islands and is becoming common in northern gardens. Smaller and squatter than C. australis it fits well into urban landscaping. The leaves are softer and more glossy  than C. australis.
Cordyline banksii Ti Ngahere bush cabbage tree, is found from north Cape to Marlborough and Westland. Its soft droping leaves, often with an orange mid rib makes an attractive feature in a wetter or shadey spot in the garden.its large inflorescence is another attractive feature.
Cordyline terminalis Ti pore is naturally endemic to the Kermadec islands, and was cultivated for its sugary roots and stems.
