Pohutukawa: A Summer phenomenon.
One of the spectacles of summer is the floral display of Pohtukawa Metrosideros excelsa. It was a good year for flowering where I was. Like many other plants, flowering seems to be strengthened by a cold spring, which in Northern NZ we experienced this year. The timing of first flowering in totara north was about a week later than last year.

Pohutukawa is one of New Zealands most stunning and well known trees that is grown and appreciated throughout the world.
Pohutukawa grow well in all soils and is surprisingly hardy but is a little frost tender while young. The plants generally flower at Christmas time, hence the common name "N.Z. Christmas Tree." The seedlings do well if placed in direct sunlight and given plenty of water.
Seed is very fine but particularly hardy. Sow thinly on top of a fine seeds raising mix. germination can start after 2 weeks.
Pohutukawa belong to the Myrtle family. Regarding NZ plants, this family can be broken into 2 groups. Those with light, wind dispersed seed that are formed inside a woody capsule (Manuka and Kanuka and Metrosideros), and those with the seed found inside a fleshy, bird dispersed berry (Ramarama and Maire).
The very light seed of Metrosideros is wind dispersed and produced in abundance. These plants are all colonisers of bare ground, or are epiphytic climbers or scramblers, usually in high light situations such as rocky bluffs, or in the forest canopy. All are particularly hardy, once established.
