Plant Heritage NZ Tony Foster Order on line

 Hi

....and welcome to another Newsletter from Bushmansfriend.

The big news is my book "Plant Heritage New Zealand" is available for purchase. This 208 page, full colour softback book retails for $49.95.

The idea has been to make a book resource to enthuse people over New Zealand native plants. I use the stories surrounding  the plants, both european and maori, to highlight special features of the flora, and how New Zealanders have created a heritage or cultural history around the plants. These are the stories I tell the hikers on the guided bush walk of the Wairakau stream track, and have told to students of all ages in 22 years of biology and horticulture teaching.

Plant Heritage New Zealand looks at the unique characteristics of New Zealand’s plants, what makes them so special. It delves into the origins and evolution of the plants, how they have inspired poems and works of art, Maori myths, stories and proverbs associated with them, and their many uses as a natural resource. Many of the sayings (whakatauki/pepeha) use the plants as metaphors for the human condition.

Plant Heritage New Zealand has over 300  photographs. 110 New Zealand plants are described by height, leaf shape and size, flowering pattern, fruit type and ecological distribution. There are 60 Maori whakatauki or sayings/ metaphors pertaining to the plants, which demonstate many of the cultural qualities New Zealanders have evoked surrounding the plants. It is an ideal book for the school library to support student projects or at home as a reference. Travellers or tourists to New Zealand will find the book useful in making sense of New Zealand's intriguing flora.
