| Elaeocarpus dentatus Hinau
Hinau is a tall forest tree to 20 metres. Leaves 8-15cm. long and dentate (toothed). The identifying feature is the bottom of the leaf has domatial pits at the midrib and vein junctions, as the above photo shows. Hinau produces beautiful clusters of drooping white flowers, 8-12 mm diam. in spring.The drupe or berry is 12mm long, purplish and similar size and shape to an olive.
